Read through 2 Thess 3:6-15

2 Thessalonians 3:6-15 New International Version

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”

We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.

Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed. Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer.

Align time

Connect with your group for discussion of our text together.

Questions to probe our text and live it:

  1.  Welcome to any new peeps! Who are new peeps we could include?
  2.  Stay tuned for our return to church campus. Right now, we will probably continue to meet remotely for worship through the end of June (stay tuned via HHGCC Facebook and e-group messages). However, groups of 10 or less can meet face-to-face with appropriate social distancing. Is that something you would like our group to consider? The Welcome Center and it’s big TV are available for groups on a pre-scheduled basis (email church office ASAP).
  3. Could each of us give an update on how you are doing this week? Take 30 second and let us know how you’re doing (1) physically and (2) emotionally. Take 30 more seconds for how you’re doing (3) spiritually. (If you run over, we won’t mind a bit!) Who will start?
  4. Now ask: What are you doing to thrive or maintain in these areas?
  5. What are some of the different things you’ve done to make a living? How did each of those bring you significant experiences and/or relationships?
  6. Consider the following three questions, then re-read 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15.
  7. What does this passage emphasize about work for a follower of Jesus?
  8. What good comes to a group through work—on a job, as a volunteer, or as a member of a family or church?
  9. What reasons do you hear people give for not working and which ones do you see to be legit?
  10. Why is it hard to talk to someone about problem choices you see them making? Have you had to deal with these situations? Any like that now for you that we could pray about?
  11. Please give us other updates or prayer needs? Let’s pray together.
  12. Please keep up the good work of encouraging others by phone calls, texts, email, Facebook post, and especially, acts of service. Thanks, too, for your faithfulness in giving and praying for each other.
