10 Points to Consider
Church Membership Is
Joyful Fellowship
Ten questions people often ask about church membership — and what Scripture says about the joy of belonging to one another in Christ.
"If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together."

Tap a question below to see how Scripture answers it. Each one builds a picture of why membership isn't paperwork — it's family.

1

No — membership recognizes something already true: believers are interconnected parts of Christ's one body, not isolated individuals. When God saves us, He joins us to one another, and that unity is lived out in the local gathering.

1 Corinthians 12:12–14For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body — Jews or Greeks, slaves or free — and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many.
Romans 12:4–5For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
2

Yes. Those who share this "precious faith" are drawn together by new life in Christ. Fellowship is the fruit of regeneration — which is why the joys and sorrows of one member are felt by the whole body, even members you're just getting to know.

1 Corinthians 12:26If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
Galatians 6:2Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
3

Because the joy of membership is rooted in the unity believers share through Christ himself. Jesus prayed for it specifically. Unity must be protected — division threatens the very spiritual partnership believers share with one another.

John 17:22–23The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
Ephesians 4:3–6Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit — one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
4

Yes — the gospel doesn't just save individuals; it unites believers into a community where joy is shared and multiplied. Fellowship isn't casual association. It's active, spiritual participation together in Christ.

1 Thessalonians 1:6And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit.
Philippians 2:2Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.
5

Membership identifies a believer with a specific body and affirms shared faith, care, and spiritual purpose. The sacraments — baptism and the Lord's Supper — visibly identify members with one another and with Christ.

1 Corinthians 10:16–17The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.
6

Joy grows as believers share life, encourage one another, and walk together in the gospel — and Scripture is direct: believers are explicitly commanded not to abandon assembling together.

3 John 4I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Hebrews 10:24–25And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
7

Church membership isn't self-focused — it's a bigger "you" in communion with others. Believers sharpen one another through consistent, committed relationships, not solo effort.

Philippians 2:3–4Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Proverbs 27:17Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
8

Often, through one another. Part of the joy of membership is seeing God's love in action through fellow believers — connected saints are strengthened, while isolated saints are more vulnerable to deception and attack.

1 John 4:10–11In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
1 Peter 5:8–9Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith.
9

Real friendship is part of it, but it's meant to flow from shared life in a local church, not stand apart from it. That kind of gospel-centered friendship reflects God's own tender care for His people.

Ecclesiastes 4:9–10Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!
10

Church membership mirrors God's own delight in His people. Paul called believers "his joy" — the same deep bond Christ shares with His church. Bearing burdens, worshiping, praying, encouraging, and growing together all happen inside committed membership.

1 Thessalonians 2:19–20For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy.
Zephaniah 3:17The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
